Chapter 1.
1.
She grabbed her bag and opened her front door. She almost stepped on them not paying attention, but at the last minute she saw them and stepped aside. On the porch in front of her door was a long white box and a little green one. The little green box sat on top of the long white box and on top of that was a note.
She took the note off of the green box. On the front in what looked like old typewriter font was her name: Samantha Dubois.
She opened the note and read what was scrawled there in seemingly perfect cartography
Jewels unearthed, rightfully yours.
You smile, my heart soars.
Roses soft and sweet.
Heart breaking, waiting to meet
In the reflection I await
When you see me know I am your fate
Your heart is what I truly desire
Love, your admirer
She looked down at the little green box. It looked like it was from a jewelry story, but she had no idea what the long white box could contain. She smiled at the prospect of having a secret admirer, but also was a little creeped out at having one at her age. She thought that when she got to the work, she would ask her friend Susan her thought on it.
She sat her bag down and opened the green box first. Inside was a pair of earrings but not just any earrings, they belonged to her Grandmother. She knew this couldn’t be them because she had been buried with them.
She looked around and saw nothing out of the ordinary, no one was watching her. Her nearest Neighbor was at least 2 miles away, so her street was completely empty, as it normally was at this hour. She set the green box down and picked up the white one and opened it.
2.
The morning had been a normal one. She got up, went to the bathroom, ate some breakfast, took a shower and got ready to go to the gym. It was her normal routine wake up eat, shower, gym, shower, and then off to work. She had been doing this routine for a few years now. Ever since Chad had left her.
They had been married for 10 years and she admitted that she had gotten comfortable with him and by the time he left she had gained a few pounds, 20 to be more precise. In the divorce papers Chad stated that the weight gain as one of the many reason he was suing for divorce, along with the inability to become pregnant. What he neglected to add was the 20 something year old from his office he had been screwing for a few years and how he had gotten her pregnant. Something Sam would never experience.
Chad had left and Sam had gotten to work on herself both physically and emotionally. Once a week she visited a therapist and she hit the gym everyday. She didn’t go to the gym to try and win Chad back, she wanted nothing more to do with that lying, cheating piece of shit as she referred to him, even in her own mind, or to even show him up. No she went for herself. She enjoyed exercising and being fit. She enjoyed how she looked. At 5’9 she was down to about 115 lbs and was fit.
She had had a few dates since Chad but nothing serious. She was focused on her. If you can’t be happy without a man, you won’t be happy with one, she remembered her Grandma telling her. Her mom was the exact opposite. Her mom felt if she didn’t have a man she would not be happy. The few dates she had been on were set up by her mother and she only went to shut her mother up even if it was just for the moment.
3.
She opened the box to find 12 red roses dripping with what looked like crimson paint. In the center of the 12 lay a single black rose. She didn’t understand the meaning behind this one rose, but what bothered her most was who had left them.
At first maybe she thought it was Chad but she didn’t believe he knew where she lived now. After the divorce they had sold their house and split the money. About a year after the divorce she received her money and bought this house. Until then she had lived with her mother. She recalled her and Chad's last conversation when he told he she…
4.
“… had gotten lazy and fat. Your falling down a hole and I refuse to allow you to drag me down with you.” Chad said with venom in his voice. “Here’s your check. Although, I doubt you need it. You will probably eat yourself to death or kill yourself. Whatever it is make sure they don’t bother me. Fat, Lazy, can’t Cook and can’t have kids. You’re pathetic.” He turned and walked away as she began to cry.
She was crying, she could feel the tears streak down her face. Chad would assume she was crying because of him, because of what he said and she knew he was right, but not in the way he would think. She wasn’t sad or feeling low because of his words, she was angry. That alone made her even madder that she allowed that piece of shit to get under her skin like that, but she used those words to motivate her. She used them to get started…
5.
…but it quickly became more about her and her happiness than him. She had lost weight, got fit, and even got a promotion at work. She was living her best life without him, in spite if him.
She couldn’t help but think this couldn’t be Chad, wouldn’t be Chad. She hadn’t spoken to him since that day he dropped the check off. Hadn’t seen him, their universes did not intersect anymore. She brought the items inside and sat them on the kitchen counter and decided she would deal with this later after work, after she talked with Susan about it.
Chapter 2.
1.
When she returned home from the gym, there was another box waiting for her by the front door. This was a small red rectangular box. She picked it up and went inside. “Alexa turn on the downstairs lights.” The Little round speaker lit up and the lights turned on. Alexa was saying something but she ignored it and focused on the new box. She opened it and threw it onto the counter in horror.
2.
She held her grandmother’s hand as she lay dying in the hospital bed. It was cold and light as a feather, except for one thing her wedding ring. The ring was a combination ring that intertwined with a diamond engagement ring. Separated each ring had half a diamond heat and when put together they formed a full one. Her grandmother had always loved this ring. She often told her that her grandfather had worked two jobs for over a year to buy it for her. And once they had been married and the heart was completed he told her know she has his while heart for all eternity. Sam had never met her grandfather as he died a few years after her mother was born. An accident at work cause a metal beam to break free and impale him through the heart. He died instantly. There was a discussion on whether the ring should go to Sam or her mom. In the end the ring was buried with her grandmother, along with her favorite earrings.
3.
In the box lay a severed hand grey and decaying. On the ring finger sat two rings that intertwined. Each ring had half a diamond heart on it and when they were together, like they are now, they made a whole diamond heart.
Sam had thrown the box and it had landed on its side. The hand, Sam recognized as the one she had held this that day leading to her grandmother’s death, had fallen out along with a slip of paper that read: Samantha Dubois.
Sam grabbed her cell to call the police and dialed 9-1-1. It rang and rang. Sam was about to give up and just go to the police station when the phone stopped ringing and voice answered.
Sam had expected to hear the voice of a 9-1-1 operator, a deep male or even a female voice, but the she heard was nothing like what she had expected.
The voice that answered was a high pitched shrilly voice. She couldn’t tell if the voice was male or female, but if she had to wager a guess she believed it was male. No, somehow she knew it was. “Samantha. It’s so go good to finally talk to you. I hope you like my gifts. It’s just my way of telling you how much I love you.” The high shrill voice said when the ringing had finally stopped.
Sam pulled the phone away and looked at the screen. It had gone black. She could see her reflection staring back at her, along with someone, something else behind her.
4.
“Samantha, Samantha.” Said the high pitched voice. Sam could here the voice coming from the little speaker on her phone and from directly behind her simultaneously.
Tears formed in her eyes, she was afraid, very afraid, but she was also very angry. “How dare whatever this thing is come into my home. How dare he, it, dig up my grandmother and take these things from here. How dare he, it.” Sam gathered her courage to turn towards the thing that was behind her. She turned and screamed.
Chapter 3.
1.
Sam screamed at what stood before her. The ceiling in her house measured 8 feet tall, the thing standing in front of her was tall enough that the top it it’s head barely brushed the ceiling. It stood before her it’s head the shape of a large watermelon and it wore a cloak that made it looked like a giant bell. It wasn’t the things shape that had made Sam scream but it’s eyes and mouth. The face itself was a dull grey, but it had solid black eyes. After she had quit screaming she thought of the old quote from the revolutionary war that had said don’t shoot till you see the whites of their eyes and Sam thought if whomever said it had faced this creature then he would never fire because it had no whites in it’s eyes, they were solid black.
It's mouth was terrifying on its own. The thing smiled at her with a crooked smile that showed greenish yellow teeth, each one ending in a razor sharp point.
It’s mouth never moved when it spoke to her. “I hope you like my gifts. It took me awhile to procure them especially for you.” The thing said with some pride. She just stood there staring at it, unable to speak.
The things smile started to fade as it became angry. “You like them don’t you? Answer me!” It said but all Sam could do was shake her head no. The thing let out an angry moan that rattled the widows in their frame. Sam turned to run, but the thing caught her by her hair and pulled her back. She fell hard and cried out in pain. The thing yanked her hair hard and she could feel it when a part of her scalp was torn from her head.
She reached back and touched where her hair had been and when She had looked at her hand again it was covered in blood.
2.
She could feel the sharp talons it had instead of fingers as they wrapped around her throat and lifter her off her feet. She knew how much she weighed and this thing had lifted her with one arm as easy as she could pick up a carton of milk.
Blood began to drip down her neck from the wound on her head and the new punctures on her neck. He brought her face close to his and she stared into those black eyes. She felt hope and her willingness to live leave her as she had become hypnotized by the two deep black holes. She saw the things mouth go from a frown to a smile as it asked in that high pitch shrill of a voice “Who’s Susan?”
Sam didn’t answer she couldn’t, but she didn’t need to. She knew the thing had looked into her mind and had picked Susan out of the many people in her life it had chosen her. She felt guilty and was again afraid, not for herself this time, but for her friend.
Fresh tears began to fall again as the thing took it’s free arm and plunged it into her chest. She could feel it in there rooting around, but it didn’t hurt, nothing hurt anymore. Then the thing found what it was looking for.
3.
It grabbed ahold and ripped her heart out. It let go of her and she dropped to the floor. The last thing she saw was the thing put her heart to it’s mouth and begin to eat. The last thing she heard was it’s high pitch shrilling laughter.
The end
